What workout tips do you know now that you wish you’d known when you first started?

This has been a lifelong process for me, and the journey is still progressing as we speak. Each of us have so many different things to learn about training, nutrition and ourselves in general. Exercise can bring on a lot of self realisation regarding negative beliefs as well as health issue.

The pre-cardio unsustainable lifestyle

I used to come from a place of more means better and killing yourself was the only way to go – namely doing tones and tones of cardio every single day. The results were anything but amazing, and this didn’t help with the kind of diet I was feeding myself.

You cannot out train a bad diet – ever

One thing I always make a habit of telling clients, and everyone who asks this question on Quora, is that you cannot ever out train a bad diet. It’s not possible, no matter how much cardio you do. All this excessive cardio does is increase inflammation, decrease your immune systems efficiency, and basically leave you in an exhausted heap on a daily basis. There are many people who also take this harder strategy, that’s not the best way to maintain quality of life.

The best exercise you can do regularly is weight training

I know a lot of people will have many comments to say about this one, but I’ve been doing this for enough years (and doing stupid things as well) to really walk the talk on this one. The body does not experience the profound changes that weight training bring, with other forms of exercise like cardio. It just does not happen, and we all need to realise this. Cardio does provide some great benefits, but the best benefits are those which increase our strength and longevity. Stronger bones to prevent fractures, strength and muscle mass to help us cope with daily life and allow us to do all those everyday essentials. Strength training can literally change your whole life and make you into a better version of yourself.

Each of us have different goals to attain, and for me, there is no goal more worthwhile than changing your body shape and your health at the same time. It gives me so much joy to be able to tell people that this can be done through weight training – especially to women. We’ve been conditioned far to often to believe that cardio is the way, when in fact – cardio is not the be all and end all. Women should know that the change they will experience from weight training will help them achieve their ideal body shape and weight. This is the one thing I wish I had grasped sooner, rather than later on in my life.

But with weight training, it’s never too late for anyone to make the change and have positive results. It just takes a change in your thoughts and then following through with proper action steps – and i hope that you too make the decision to train with weights to increase your quality of life long term.
