I think I spend more money on food than anything else. But seeing as this is essential, then It’s not counted towards my own “training budget.”
Now, seeing as the whole world is training from home due to gym closures, It’s become a bit more costly to accumulate some form of equipment. All up this month, I’ve spent over $300 on some TRX bands, a pull-up bar and various resistant bands. As for supplements, I only really buy my usual vegan protein powder (as I’m allergic to dairy and soy), then, of course, my beloved BCAA, pro-biotics, fibre, glutamine and magnesium, which I’ve been using for years.
There isn’t a lot more that you would need to spend, and food doesn’t have to play an intricate part in this. Just think of the easy essentials, and you can eat in on a rotation basis:
- Eggs
- Chicken breast
- Seafood
- Red meats
The organic varieties of these are always better – from a nutritional standpoint, but not everyone has the financial flexibility for this. I live on eggs, seafood, sweet potato, oats, bananas and greens. I’m sure we can all make some adjustments according to our budget restrictions. If you make the right choices for your goals, you can’t go wrong.
As for supplements, I’m at odds with this, because not all of us can get the nutrients we need, because of the way our food is reared, and let’s not forget the importance of gut health in this equation as well. If your gut is not working as optimally as it should, and can, you will get into all sort of problems when it comes to absorption of nutrients and minerals. I have to flag the importance of this because not many people take it seriously until they experience malnourishment – as I have.
How do you combat gut issues? Easy, don’t keep eating the things that upset your gut, and make sure you eat more of the foods that don’t cause you distress. Keep up with your pre and pro-biotics every single day. Glutamine is great for bringing your gut health back into balance, as well as helping to increase the efficiency of our immune (good news during this time). Magnesium helps with muscle recover, calm the digestion upsets and induces deeper and more restful sleep. I recommend we put our gut health as a top priority on our list of musts, considering it’s a key component of how our bodies function.
Lastly, when it comes to equipment, the gym is always the best. Multi-joint movements and throw in some isolated ones when your session is about to finish. You can get away with doing these regularly, to increase strength, muscle mass and change your body shape. Given we can’t do this right now, settle for what you can do right now. Resistant bands are the cheapest things around and are very useful. I’ll let you know as time progresses how it works for me, but so far, so good.
As long as we are in good health, and none of our loved ones is suffering (and it’s a bonus If you have a job right now) we have a lot to be thankful for. Remember, your health is your wealth, so do all you can with what you have.
